At Skating Edge Ice Arena, we believe that hockey is more than a sport — it’s a pathway to confidence, leadership, and community. That’s why we’re proud to host The Power Project, a groundbreaking girls hockey program designed to open doors, break barriers, and empower the next generation of female athletes.
Founded with the mission to provide girls from underrepresented communities with the opportunity to grow through mentorship, The Power Project blends the thrill of hockey with life-changing personal development. The program is specifically designed for girls ages 7–16, building not only skating skills but also confidence, self-esteem, and a belief that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
Building Confidence and Diversity in Hockey
Representation matters — and The Power Project is changing the face of hockey by creating space where girls of color can see themselves thriving on the ice. Ice hockey has traditionally lacked diversity, but this program is rewriting that story, making the sport more inclusive and accessible than ever before.
“When I first fell in love with hockey, I noticed how few girls — especially girls of color — were on the ice. That’s why The Power Project exists: to create opportunities, build confidence, and show these girls that they belong here. They’re learning far more than hockey skills — they’re learning they are capable of anything.”
— Lameka Bell, Founder, The Power Project
Participants learn fundamental hockey skills in a welcoming environment while also building life skills like leadership, teamwork, and discipline. Beyond the rink, mentorship plays a central role. Coaches and volunteers check in on mental health, provide guidance, and offer a safe, supportive space for each girl to grow and succeed.
More Than Hockey: Mentorship, Friendship, and Growth
What makes The Power Project unique is how it extends far beyond the ice. Each season includes a wide variety of experiences — from skating and goal-line training to activities like baking, sailing, field trips, and leadership workshops. This holistic approach helps participants develop quick thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills while forming lasting friendships.
Many participants arrive shy and uncertain but leave the program more confident, resilient, and inspired. One early participant, once hesitant to join because she was the only Black girl in her clinics, found community and belonging here — and is now a college senior excited for the future.
Skating Edge’s Commitment to Youth Empowerment
Hosting The Power Project is more than just providing ice time — it’s part of our commitment to youth hockey empowerment and to building a stronger, more inclusive future for the sport. Skating Edge partners with the program to ensure participants have access to the ice, pro shop essentials, and a welcoming community that celebrates every player’s potential.
“The Power Project is exactly the kind of program we’re proud to champion here at Skating Edge. It’s about more than sport — it’s about mentorship, empowerment, and opening doors. Watching these young athletes grow on and off the ice is truly inspiring.”
— Daniel Kim, General Manager, Skating Edge Ice Arena
We’re honored to support this mission and to witness the incredible growth, joy, and achievement it inspires in young athletes.
