One of the things that makes Skating Edge unique is that skating can take you in many different directions.
After Learn to Skate, some skaters discover a love for figure skating. Others move into hockey or continue skating recreationally for fitness, friendship, and fun. There isn’t one right path and there doesn’t need to be.
At Skating Edge, we believe in helping skaters find the experience that feels right for them and supporting them as they grow.
For skaters who fall in love with the artistry, challenge, and creativity of figure skating, there are countless opportunities to continue developing beyond the basics.
From performances and competitions to Ice Dance, synchronized skating, private lessons, and skill development, figure skating offers a pathway that can grow alongside every skater.
Taking the Next Step After Learn to Skate
One of the most common questions families ask is:
“What comes after Learn to Skate?”
According to Figure Skating Director Jacki Donoghue, there isn’t one answer and that’s what makes skating special.
Many skaters begin participating in recitals and performances while still enrolled in skating school. Others begin preparing for competition or exploring more specialized areas of skating.
As skaters continue developing, they may also begin working with a private coach who can help guide their next steps based on goals, interests, and skating style.
“Go for it. That’s the beauty of skating, it’s never too late. There is something for everyone.” — Jacki Donoghue
Finding Your Place in Figure Skating
Once skaters build a strong foundation, new opportunities begin to open.
Freestyle & Skill Development
For skaters who enjoy individual progression, freestyle sessions allow skaters to continue developing jumps, spins, skating skills, and personal goals.
Skaters may also work toward testing and skill advancement through structured progression.
Competitions & Performances
Some skaters choose to challenge themselves through competitions or enjoy opportunities to perform in recitals and showcases.
Competition can begin earlier than many families realize and often happens alongside regular skating classes.
Ice Dance
Ice Dance offers a different way to experience skating through rhythm, movement, edges, and musical interpretation.
It’s welcoming, social, and gives skaters the opportunity to develop flow and skating quality while learning something new.
Synchronized Skating
For skaters who enjoy being part of a team, synchronized skating offers a unique experience.
Skating Edge’s growing synchronized skating team, LA Edge, brings skaters together to train, perform, and build friendships through shared goals and teamwork.
How Do You Know Which Path Is Right?
Families sometimes feel pressure to choose immediately, but Jacki encourages exploration.
Many extended programs become available around Basic 5 and above, giving skaters opportunities to try different experiences and discover what they enjoy most.
At Skating Edge, the goal isn’t to push skaters into a particular path. It’s to help them find the right fit. That means trying new classes, asking questions, and staying open to different experiences.
“We are a very easy going, family rink. Our first priority is helping guide skaters to their individual greatest potential.”
The Secret to Progress? Consistency.
When asked what matters most as skaters advance, Jacki’s answer was simple. Consistency.
Progress often comes quickly at first, then slows as skills become more complex. That’s normal.
The skaters who continue progressing are the ones who keep showing up, keep practicing, and continue building one skill at a time. Every challenge becomes part of the process.
Figure Skating Isn’t Just for Kids
At Skating Edge, adult skaters are part of the community too.
Adults are encouraged to progress at their own pace and build confidence on the ice in a comfortable and supportive environment.
Private lessons, performances, recitals, and competitions are all possibilities for adult skaters as well.
Because skating doesn’t have an age limit.
More Than a Rink
What keeps skaters coming back year after year?
For Jacki, the answer is simple. Skating Edge is a family.
“We are not a big corporation, we do not just see numbers. People enjoy our rink because we are there for them and we nurture relationships.”
Whether your goal is to compete, perform, skate recreationally, or simply continue learning, there’s a place for you here.
