When hockey players want to improve their game, they often focus on shooting, stickhandling, or systems play.
But according to world-renowned skating coach Robby Glantz, the foundation of hockey success starts somewhere else.
Skating.
This July, Skating Edge Ice Arena is excited to welcome Robby Glantz for a two-day Power Skating Clinic designed to help players improve speed, acceleration, edge control, puck control, and overall skating efficiency through high-energy, game-focused training.
For players looking to gain an edge heading into the season, it’s a unique opportunity to learn from one of hockey’s most respected skating instructors.
Why Skating Still Matters
One of the biggest misconceptions in youth hockey is that skating is a skill players learn once and then move on from.
Glantz sees it differently.
"The biggest mistake is thinking skating is something you 'learn once.' The best players in the world are constantly working on their skating because it's the foundation of everything they do. Too many young players focus only on stickhandling or shooting and don't realize that better skating creates more time, more space, and more opportunities with the puck."
Whether a player is competing in house league, travel hockey, high school hockey, or simply looking to become more confident on the ice, skating remains one of the most important skills they can develop.
Learning from One of the Best
For decades, Robby Glantz has helped players at every level improve the way they move on the ice.
His experience includes:
- NHL Network Skating & Skills Expert
- More than 12 years as Power Skating Coach for the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings
- Power Skating Coach and Consultant for NHL prospects from the Anaheim Ducks and Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets organizations
- Power Skating Coach for the German National Teams
- Instructor for professional hockey organizations around the world
- Contributor to USA Hockey Magazine, Hockey Player Magazine, Inside Hockey Magazine, and more
His innovative training systems have helped thousands of players develop greater speed, power, and confidence.
What Separates Great Skaters?
According to Glantz, being a great skater isn’t just about skating fast in a straight line.
"Great skaters are efficient. It's not just about being fast in a straight line. It's about explosive first steps, edge control, balance, agility, and being able to accelerate and change direction without losing speed. The players who master those skills have an advantage every shift."
That ability to create separation, recover defensively, and move efficiently around the ice often becomes the difference-maker during games.
One Skill Every Player Should Work On
If there was one area Glantz recommends every player focus on this summer, it’s acceleration.
"If I had to choose one, it would be explosive acceleration. The first three strides can determine who wins races to the puck, creates separation, or closes a gap defensively. Developing a quicker first step will make every player more effective, regardless of their position."
It’s a skill that benefits forwards, defensemen, and players at every level of the game.
What Players Can Expect at the Clinic
The Robby Glantz Power Skating Clinic combines technical instruction with high-energy drills designed to improve real game performance.
Players will work on:
- Power skating
- Speed and acceleration
- Edge control
- Stickhandling
- Skating with the puck
- Hockey-specific movement training
- Bungie cord resistance training
- Power moves and speed with the puck
Players are grouped by age and skill level to ensure appropriate instruction and development opportunities.
Glantz describes the experience as both challenging and encouraging.
"Players can expect a high-energy, positive environment with lots of individual feedback. We break down skating into teachable skills and use proven drills that build power, speed, agility, and confidence. Every player, from beginner to elite, will leave with specific tools they can continue to practice long after the clinic ends."
Building Confidence Through Development
At its core, hockey development isn’t just about skating faster.
It’s about building confidence.
Glantz hopes every player leaves the clinic with a better understanding of how to improve and the motivation to continue developing their game.
"I want every player to leave more confident than when they arrived. Confidence comes from understanding how to improve and having the right techniques to practice. My goal is for players to skate away with better mechanics, a stronger work ethic, and the motivation to keep developing their game throughout the season."
