She came for her son. She stayed for herself.
It started with a birthday party. Back in November, Kelly Suyehara came to Skating Edge with her son Dylan, expecting a fun day on the ice. Like many parents, she was there for him, helping him around the rink and sharing in the moment.
But something unexpected happened.
“Afterwards, I couldn’t stop thinking about how much fun I had on the ice. I can’t explain it, but it just felt good, like an endorphin rush.”
That feeling stayed with her. And instead of letting it pass, she decided to come back.
Starting Learn to Skate Together
Kelly had been looking for a physical activity for Dylan, something that felt like the right fit for him. When she explored Skating Edge’s Learn to Skate program, she discovered something that made it even easier to say yes.
There were adult skating classes offered at the same time.
“It was easy to get him on board because we would be learning together.”
With no real skating experience beyond childhood birthday parties, Kelly stepped onto the ice as a beginner. She was nervous at first, but quickly realized she was not alone, surrounded by others who were just getting started.
Learning to Skate as an Adult
For many adults, starting something new can feel intimidating. But Kelly’s experience shows just how welcoming adult skating classes can be.
She quickly felt both the physical and mental benefits of being on the ice. What started as something new soon became something she genuinely looked forward to each week.
“It’s super fun. I’m very goal oriented, and I keep thinking about all the things I want to learn.”
Skating opened the door for her to try new things, build confidence, and stay motivated in a way she did not expect.
A Family Experience on the Ice
While Kelly and Dylan skate in different classes, the experience is something they share. Coming to the rink, practicing, and skating together during public sessions has become part of their routine.
“I’m really grateful to have a shared activity that allows us to build these memories.”
Watching Dylan learn in his own class also helped ease her nerves, creating a more comfortable and encouraging experience for both of them.
A Welcoming Skating Community
One of the biggest reasons adults continue skating is the environment at Skating Edge. From the moment they arrive, skaters are supported by a team that makes the experience approachable and enjoyable.
“The community at Skating Edge is fantastic. From the front desk, to the coaches and other skaters, to Sam at Legend Has It Diner. It’s a really welcoming rink.”
The coaching experience has also played a key role in her progress, with instructors who meet skaters where they are and continue to challenge them as they grow.
Coach Insight: Adult Skating at Skating Edge
According to Figure Skating Director Jacki Davison, adult skaters bring a unique perspective to the ice. They are often more curious about the details behind what they are learning, which allows coaches to break skills down in a deeper and more meaningful way.
“It is never too late to start skating. Learning a new skill and meeting new people can really energize you.”
Skating Edge’s adult program is designed to support all levels, from true beginners to more experienced skaters, with the flexibility to progress at your own pace and without pressure. As skaters continue to grow, there are opportunities to move into private lessons, performances, and even adult competitions.
Why Adults Keep Coming Back
For Kelly, skating has become more than just a class. It is something she looks forward to each week, both for the experience and for the personal benefits it brings.
“It’s a wonderful way for me to reset mentally from the stresses of life and work.”
She and Dylan have already signed up for their next session, and she is excited to continue building her skills and confidence on the ice.
