Coach Spotlight: Kamila Haynes

From the Russian National Team to Skating Edge: Building Stronger, More Confident Skaters Through Technical Excellence

At Skating Edge Ice Arena, every coach brings something unique to the ice. For Kamila Haynes, that includes more than 17 years of coaching experience across Russia and the United States, a background competing at a high level in both singles and synchronized skating, and a passion for helping athletes build confidence through strong skating fundamentals.

Today, Kamila works with both figure skaters and hockey players, blending technical precision with a modern, athlete-first coaching style focused on long-term growth.

Growing Up in Russia and Learning the Value of Discipline

Kamila began skating at just three years old in Russia, where figure skating has long been part of the culture. She trained in Siberia and spent years immersed in a system known for discipline, structure, and technical excellence.

Her skating journey took her through singles competition and eventually onto the Russian National Team in synchronized skating. Along the way, she learned lessons that still influence her coaching today.

“Growing up in the Russian skating system was very intense and demanding, but it taught me discipline, attention to detail, strong work ethic, and an understanding of how much daily work truly goes into high-level performance.”

After her competitive career, Kamila graduated with honors from Lesgaft National State University of Physical Education and Sport in Saint Petersburg and went on to work alongside respected coaches including Alexei Mishin, Tatyana Mishina, and Oleg Tataurov.

That experience helped shape her technical understanding and reinforced the importance of continuing to evolve as a coach.

Building Better Skaters Through Strong Foundations

One of the things that makes Kamila’s approach unique is her ability to work across both figure skating and hockey.

Whether she’s coaching a young skater learning edges or a hockey player developing more efficient movement, the foundation stays the same: quality skating.

Her coaching emphasizes edge work, speed, balance, acceleration, and efficient movement patterns that support long-term success.

“I truly believe that skating quality, edge work, speed, and efficiency are the foundation of everything on the ice. It does not matter if you are a figure skater or a hockey player, a beginner or a high-level athlete.”

Kamila believes strong fundamentals don’t just improve performance — they build confidence and help athletes move more naturally and efficiently.

Her broad experience allows her to adapt her coaching style depending on each athlete’s goals, learning style, and personality.

A Modern Coaching Philosophy Rooted in Growth

While Kamila’s foundation comes from a highly disciplined environment, her philosophy has evolved over time.

Today, she focuses on creating an environment where athletes are challenged to improve while still enjoying the process and developing a lasting connection to the sport.

She believes coaching should go beyond technical skills.

“It is important to me to create a balance — maintaining a positive and supportive environment where athletes enjoy the process while still keeping discipline, skating quality, and the motivation to grow.”

Since joining Skating Edge, Kamila has enjoyed becoming part of a community that shares those values and supports athletes at every stage of development.
