At Skating Edge, our hockey pathway is designed to guide players from their first time on the ice through youth hockey development and into league play.
Whether your player is just getting started or ready for the next step, our programs provide a clear progression that builds confidence, skills, and a love for the game.
Step 1: Get on the Ice
Every hockey journey begins with learning how to skate.
Our Learn to Skate programs help players build balance, coordination, and confidence on the ice.
Start here:
- Try Hockey for Free (for players with little to no experience)
- Learn to Skate USA
- Snowplow Sam
- Basic Skills 1
This stage is all about building a strong foundation and feeling comfortable on the ice.
Step 2: Hockey Skating Skills
Once players are comfortable on the ice, they can move into hockey-specific skating.
Our Hockey 1–4 progression focuses on developing the skating skills that directly translate into hockey performance.
Players will build:
- Edge control and balance
- Stride mechanics and power
- Agility and efficiency
- Confidence skating in both directions
Players must complete Basic 1 (or equivalent) to enroll in Hockey 1.
Strong skating is the foundation of every successful hockey player.
Step 3: Learn to Play Hockey
With a solid skating foundation, players are ready to begin applying their skills in a hockey environment.
Little Kings Learn to Play
An introductory program designed for ages 5–9, where players are introduced to hockey fundamentals in a fun, supportive setting.
AND/OR
Future Wings Hockey Development Program
A structured development program focused on building skills, confidence, and game readiness.
Players will work on:
- Stickhandling and puck control
- Shooting and passing
- Positioning and game awareness
We strongly encourage players to continue Hockey 3–4 classes while enrolled in Future Wings to keep developing the skating skills that support success in the game.
Step 4: League Play
As players continue to develop, they are ready to transition into team-based hockey.
Skating Edge Youth Hockey League
A structured league environment where players can:
- Apply skills in real game situations
- Build hockey IQ
- Gain confidence in a team setting
This is a natural next step before progressing to more competitive levels of hockey.

Hockey Pathway FAQs
When can my player start hockey?
Players can try hockey with little to no experience through Try Hockey for Free.
To begin hockey-specific classes, players should first complete Learn to Skate USA levels through Basic 1 (or equivalent) to build a strong skating foundation. From there, they can progress into Hockey 1 and continue through the hockey pathway.
What comes after Little Kings?
Future Wings is the next step for players ready to continue building their skills.
Should my player continue skating classes?
Yes. We strongly recommend continuing Hockey 3–4 while participating in Future Wings.
