Behind the Scenes: Skating Edge Undergoes Ice Surface Replacement to Elevate Your Experience

Skating Edge Ice Arena temporarily closes August 1–15 for ice replacement and facility maintenance. Learn about the process and why it’s a game-changer for skaters!

Skating Edge Ice Arena Prepares for New Ice Surface and Smoother Skating Season

Skating Edge Ice Arena is taking a brief pause from August 1–15, 2025, to perform a major facility upgrade: a full replacement of the ice surface. This important project will help deliver a smoother, more consistent skating experience for all users while improving overall facility efficiency.

“We’re excited to refresh the ice surface and prepare the rink for a great fall and winter season,” says General Manager Daniel Kim. “This project will enhance the quality of our ice and the experience for everyone who walks through our doors—from first-time skaters to elite athletes.”

What’s Happening During the Closure?

Starting the evening of July 31, our team will:

  • Power down the compressors to begin melting the current ice surface
  • Use fans and sump pumps to safely remove moisture and melted ice
  • Target and remove a minor sub-floor heave beneath the surface
  • Replace any affected sand, re-level the floor with sod rollers
  • Bring in Southwest Venue Services for professional ice painting
  • Rebuild the new ice sheet using a high-volume hose from Ice In Paradise

“This project is about long-term performance and efficiency,” notes Mike Geiler, The Sports Facilites Companies Regional Director of Ice Operations. “With a level foundation and freshly painted ice, we can maintain consistent depth across the rink, which improves both playability and energy efficiency.”

Why Now?

Skating Edge is committed to providing a top-tier environment for figure skaters, hockey players, and recreational skaters alike. This proactive maintenance ensures our ice remains world-class. The current ice surface had developed minor inconsistencies in elevation due to natural wear and tear, making this the perfect time for a reset during a typically slower summer period.

“It’s about improving quality and setting our skaters up for success,” adds Kim. “We’re thrilled about the difference our skaters will feel when they return.”

What You Can Expect When We Reopen

We plan to resume regular programming on Saturday, August 16, with a freshly leveled and painted ice surface that will feel better underfoot and perform more consistently for all skating activities.

Thank you for your patience as we invest in a stronger future for Skating Edge. We can’t wait to welcome you back to a newly refreshed rink, ready to take your skating to the next level.
